BLOOD DRIVE ON SEPTEMBER 21!!
By Joselina L. Medrano
The Foothills Bar Association and the San Diego Superior Court/ East County Division are co-sponsoring a Blood Drive for the San Diego Blood Bank. It will be held on Wednesday, September 21, 2005, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in front of the East County Courthouse. Donors can walk-up to the Bloodmobile during that time. However, if you would prefer to schedule a time to give blood on that day, or if you would like to volunteer during the drive, please call Joselina L. Medrano at (619) 562-9999 or Jackie Fisher at (619) 441-6670.
Donors should eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids prior to a donation. You may also want to increase your consumption of iron-rich foods during the week before donating blood. After donating, you will be provided with refreshments while you relax and ponder on your good deed. You will ll also receive a free T-shirt and chances to win great raffle prizes. For more information on donating blood, please visit www.sandiegobloodbank.org.
Here are some Facts about Blood Donation provided by the San Diego Blood Bank: Did You Know? - Hospital Patients Need Your Blood. In the United States, a blood transfusion takes place every two seconds. To adequately supply the Southern California hospitals served by the San Diego Blood Bank, approximately 400 donations are needed every day.
One Donation Can Save Up To 3 Lives. Donated blood is separated into components that can be used for several patients. Red blood cells control anemia. Platelets help blood clots and are needed by patients undergoing chemotherapy. Plasma is used for burn victims.
Everything used in the donation process is sterile, disposable and used only once. You cannot contract any disease by giving blood. You Can Give In Many Ways, Many Times. A whole-blood donor can donate

HOLIDAYS
The East County Courthouse will be closed for Labor Day - Monday September 5, 2005.
Appearance at Small Claims Hearings by Defendant Real Property Owners
Generally, a small claims defendant may only participate in the small claims hearing by personally appearing at the hearing. An exception to this requirement, however, involves nonresident owners of California real property.
Per Code of Civil Procedure Section 116.540 (g), an owner of real property may defend against a small claims action relating to that property without personally appearing. The owner may submit to the court written declarations to serve as evidentiary testimony in his defense.
Moreover, the owner may allow for the appearance of a representative to participate on his behalf if that individual is serving without compensation. The representative may appear a maximum of four times on behalf of others during the calendar year. The defendant nonresident owner may also utilize both written evidentiary documentation and an appearance by a representative in order to defend against a small claims action.
on-resident real property owners are subject to greater jurisdiction from the small claims court in comparison with other small claims defendants. Code of Civil Procedure Section 116.340 (e) provides that non-resident real property owners may be served with a small claims lawsuit at their out-of-state residence when the claim relates to property owned in California, and the owner has no lawfully designated agent in California for service of process. The code represents a limited exception to the general requirement that service of a small claims lawsuit must be provided for within the state of California.

every 56 days, or six times a year. An apheresis donor can donate up to 24 times a year. An autologous donation (blood given before someone's own planned surgery) may be possible regardless of weight, age or medical history.
A Super Donation is an automated collection of blood cells or plasma (blood components). Donors who participate in this program are designated as Super Donors because they pledge to donate for patients in need of blood components due to leukemia or other disorders; or due to an organ transplant or open heart surgery.
You Have A Lot To Give. The average size man has 12 pints of blood. The average woman has 10 pints. Each whole blood donation is one pint. Seven percent of your body weight is blood. When you donate blood, your body immediately begins to restore the blood that was given.
Remember: donating blood is safe, simple, and saves lives.
